Yesterday in Strasbourg, Susan Elan Jones MP showcased the work of Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod to an audience of Members of Parliament from 47 different European countries.
Speaking as one of the UK Parliament’s representatives to the Council of Europe, the Clwyd South MP said before her speech: “For so many of us in our area, this is the time of year when we enjoy the wonderful Llangollen Eisteddfod, but I wanted to take the dream further this year by sharing it with a forum of a few hundred MPs. Our local Eisteddfod is unique in our continent and our world – and my view as a proud Vice President of the festival as well as the local MP is that we need to do all we can to tell others about it.”
During her speech, Susan Elan Jones MP said: “Wherever people in my country stand on that one narrow vote on one day in 2016, I still believe that the majority of people are proud to be part of our shared continent of Europe – and nowhere is that more true than in the field of cultural exchange”.
“Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is a festival that was dreamt up by visionaries who came together after the second world war and committed themselves to a world of peace and cultural exchange.
“I would like to invite you all to Wales and to Llangollen to share in this great cultural dream.
“As the motto of the international festival puts it, in Welsh – “Byd gwyn fydd byd a gano. Gwaraidd fydd ei gerddi fo”. “Blessed is a world that sings, Gentle are its songs.”
