Susan Elan Jones MP has hosted an event in Parliament in support of the Royal British Legion’s Count Them In campaign.
The Clwyd South MP said: “I’ve long felt we should do more to support members of our forces and military veterans. That’s why I have worked closely with the Legion since my early days as an MP. Last year, I pressed the Government to support the addition of an extra question to the next Census so that we can know where our armed service personnel and veterans live, and thereby support them better. That’s the essence of the excellent Count Them In campaign which I am very pleased to support.”
A breakthrough moment for the campaign came last October when the Office for National Statistics (ONS) confirmed their intention to recommend the inclusion of a question on the Armed Forces community in the next census in England and Wales. The Government first announced its support for the measure in answer to a speech in the House of Commons made by Susan Elan Jones MP. The Royal British Legion is now awaiting the question’s inclusion in the final census white paper.
