About Susan

Susan is honoured to be the MP representing the area where her family has lived for more than 200 years. She went to Ponciau, Grango and Ruabon schools, and Bristol and Cardiff universities.

Before first being elected to Parliament in 2010, Susan spent 15 years working for charities. She is committed to using her expertise in this area as part of her work as an MP. Susan is Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Charities and Volunteering and she co-authored ‘The Red Book of the Voluntary Sector’. Her campaigning also played a significant role in persuading the Government to undertake a sentencing review for all driving offences.

Susan is a strong supporter of the Welsh language and culture and, as a member of the Welsh Affairs Select Committee and the Public Bodies Bill Committee, championed the cause of Welsh TV channel S4C.

After serving as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Rt Hon Harriet Harman MP , Susan was a member of Labour’s frontbench team between 2011 and 2016. She is now a member of the House of Commons Committee on Standards and the Committee of Privileges. Susan is a member of many different community organisations in her constituency. These include St David’s Church, Rhos; the Brymbo Heritage Group; and the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, of which she is Vice President.
